« Previous | Next »
The $1.6B Port of Melbourne capacity upgrade project receives a go signal from Victoria’s Planning Minister, Matthew Guy. This is after the Commonwealth has approved the project under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
Port of Melbourne to be operational in 2016
This decision gives the go signal for the Webb Dock project to begin. If all thing goes according to plan, Melbourne’s third container terminal will be operational within the last quarter of 2016.
Benchmarking for safety and productivity
Strict environmental standards will be implemented during the construction. This is to protect Port Phillip Bay, along with the surrounding waterways and natural environment.
Matthew stressed the importance of designing and installing quality landscape and vegetation buffers. New benchmarks for environmental standards will also be implemented to provide the highest level of transparency and performance. This is to fulfill the goal of the Port of Melbourne’s charter to deliver a vibrant and sustainable Port-City.
Port upgrade offers solution to debilitating congestion problem
The government is determined to keep Melbourne the “freight and logistics capital of Australia.” Port Minister Denis Napthine stated that the port expansion is just one of the government’s answer to the problem of debilitating congestion in the city.
Webb Dock development to generate more jobs
The development of Webb Dock is a way of preventing the state economy from going into a meltdown. It is expected to generate some 1100 additional direct jobs and 1900 indirect employment for Victoria residents.
