Massive Los Angeles / Long Beach Wharfie-Sympathy Strike Spreads
« Previous | Next »
Shippers, logisticians and carriers on the Australasian / North America trade will likely be affected by spreading unrest at the massive Los Angeles / Long Beach gateway ports.
Long Beach
As of 5pm local time on Thursday November 29, three of the six box terminals were closed. These are:
- Long Beach Container Terminal at Pier F;
- International Transportation Service at Pier G; and
- Total Terminals International at Pier T.
The following terminals were operating; SSAT at Pier A, SSAT/Matson at Pier C and Pacific Container Terminal at Pier J.
Los Angeles
Seven container terminals at the Port of Los Angeles are not in operation as of Thursday, Nov. 29. These terminals are:
- China Shipping (Berth 100);
- Yang Ming (Berths 121-131);
- Yusen (Berths 212-225)
- Evergreen (Berths 226-236);
- APL (Berths 302-305);
- APM (Berths 401-404);
- California United (Berths 405-406).
One container terminal, TraPac, remains open.
Equities Analysts at Stifel Nicolaus Transportation & Logistics Research Group report that the dispute centres on an expired contract for clerical workers represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. Wharfies have gone on a sympathy strike.
“The sympathy strike is what is important here… if this continues for a prolonged period or spreads further along the West Coast, it would seriously disrupt supply chains. Supply chain disruption would leave shippers scrambling to find new ways to move freight, and in the trans-Pacific trade lane. On top of the current issue, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) contract expires in a month, and there are rumblings of a potential work stoppage at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports at that time.”
