Minister addresses port-rail issues at Melbourne

|

Prioritising public transport over regional rail freight services is causing the congestion problem at the Melbourne Port, told Terry Mulder.

Delay rate risesĀ as trains decrease

The Victorian transport minister spoke at the AusIntermodal Conference in Melbourne, addressing port-rail problems in the region. Mulder noted that as the number of trains going into a metropolitan area decreases, the delay rate rises.

Establish Melbourne regional rail link

To solve this, Mulder believes in establishing a regional rail link. Freight trains will have more access to the metropolitan rail network once the link is in place as passenger trains will be out of the way. The minister added that the solution aims to reduce port access delays especially during peak hours.

Mulder also addressed issues concerning the port’s rail operations. He said that certain economic barriers set up in the port have made the operation of short-haul container shuttles difficult.

Sydney has a successful intermodal terminal network

Looking to the rail system in the country’s capital, the minister points out that Sydney has a successful intermodal terminal network. It is proof, he told, that the chance of having an effective short-haul rail system in Victoria is quite possible.

The minister pointed out that the trick is in getting trains into and out of the port quickly, without any unfair pricing that is discriminatory against rail attached to it. The recent AusIntermodal Conference was organised by the publishers of Lloyd’s List Australia: Informa Australia.
